Performance of home cinema installations is influenced by the presence of boundaries, and so it is important to understand how sound propagates in a home cinema room. Let's imagine a home cinema with a starting speaker and a listener located somewhere at the home cinema seating area. Let's now assume that at some time (t=0) a signal is played through the speaker. There are three main aspects to how the sound of a speaker behaves in the cinema room, which are as follows:

1. After a short delay the listener in the cinema room will hear the sound of the starting speaker, which will have travelled the shortest distance between it and the listener. The delay will be a function of the distance, as sound travels 344 meters per second. The shortest path between the starting speaker and the listener is the direct path and therefore this is the first thing the listener hears. This component of the sound is called the direct sound. The direct component is important because it carries the information in the signal in an uncontaminated form. Therefore a high level of direct sound is required in home cinema installations, for a clear sound and good dialogue intelligibility. We need to point out that the intensity of the direct sound reduces as the square of the distance from the source, in the same way as a sound in free space.

2. A little time later the listener will then hear sounds which have been reflected off one or more surfaces (walls, floor, etc.). These sounds are called early reflections and they are separated in both time and direction from the direct sound. These sounds will vary as the home cinema speaker or the listener moves within the cinema room. We use these changes to give us information about both the size of the home cinema room and the position of the home cinema speakers in the space. If any of these reflections are much delayed, total path length difference longer than about 30 milliseconds, they will then be perceived as echoes. Early reflections can cause interference effects, and these can both reduce the intelligibility of dialogues of home cinema installations, and cause unwanted timbre change in music in the home cinema room. The intensity levels of the early reflections are affected by both the distance and the surface from which they are reflected. In general most surfaces in dedicated home cinemas absorb some of the sound energy and so the reflection is weakened by the absorption.

3. The absorption coefficient of acoustic wall treatments in home cinema installations defines the amount of energy, or power that is removed from the sound when it strikes them. In general the absorption coefficient of real acoustic treatments in a home cinema room will vary with frequency. The amount of energy, or power, removed by a given area of an acoustic wall panel will depend on the energy, or power, per unit area striking it. As the sound intensity is a measure of the power per unit area this means that the intensity of the sound reflected is reduced in proportion to the absorption coefficient.

High end home cinema designs will take early reflection analysis into consideration, in order to produce an acoustically correct home cinema environment.

There are three ways to receive primary HDTV. Via Satellite, from cable or fiber optic providers, and over the air.

Note: Verizon's FiOS is a fiber optic verses coax cable way of providing service. As for Satellite the main providers are. Voom, DirecTV, and Dish Network. There's also Express Vu, and Star Choice. These are Canadian companies and may require that you purchase there service through an address broker such as Freeway Support. Also a new service provider to look into C/KU Band where you can receive signals directly from their source.

All three methods require a Set-Top-Box, or STB to decode the HDTV signal. It is important not to confuse HDTV and DTV. DTV is digital TV. A provider may have both DTV and HDTV. However the STB you use needs to be capable of decoding HDTV and DTV. The same STB you may have been using for DTV may not decode HDTV.

All three methods will you a different line up of channels, as well as different HDTV resolutions. In other words the same channel may be in different resolutions from different sources. Ex. from satellite the signal resolution might be 1080i, but via fiber optic the might be providing 1080p. Currently providers are advertising HD, but not the resolution there signal is for specific channels. I say specific channels because not all the channels are at the same resolution. This will change as HD use progresses. Currently most sporting events are in 1080i, but you can still find channels in 720p.

The other method is to modify your home computer to receive HD signals. similar to Over the Air this is best accomplished with an antenna, vs. a dish. Once modified you can transfer the signal to your HDTV via an S-Video cable.

Last but not least, do not confuse HD, HDTV and HDTV signals. There are new camcorders now that record in HD, and NASA has a new satellite that takes pictures and records in HD. This does not mean that these are HDTV signals ready for your STB to decode. Unless your STB is decoding an HD signal, or the signal is coming from another HD source directly into your HDTV it's most likely not going to be in HD. However a direct signal from a HD source such as a HD or BlueRay disc player, a HD camcorder, or a computer modified to decode HDTV signals will be in HD.

The Personal Video Recorder replaces your VCR

Don't things move quickly nowadays? It seems only yesterday that the first VCRs became available and changed the way that we used our TVs forever. Now it seems that you will soon have to replace all your old analog TV equipment including your VCR with digital TV receivers and digital video recorders (DVR) if you haven't done so already.

Analog satellite TV, cable and terrestrial TV transmissions will soon be turned off and when that happens you will need digital TV equipment if you plan to continue to watch TV.

If you don't want to change your VCR at this time you will still be able to record digital TV from the analog AV output of your digital receiver but you won't be able to take advantage of all the new features on offer. In fact you will have fewer options available to you than before unless you upgrade to a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) or a DVR.

Digital Video Recorder or DVR explained?

A DVR captures digital video or digital TV and records it onto a hard drive like the one in your computer. In fact a DVR is a computer dedicated to the task of recording and playing back digital video. All a computer needs to be able to do this over and above all the usual stuff is a digital TV tuner.

Your DVR tuner has to be able to receive and decode signals from your chosen provider so there are different types available depending on whether you use digital satellite TV, cable or terrestrial TV.

Some systems that provide premium pay for channels will insist that you use their own equipment to receive their programming and you may have to pay even more to use their PVR or DVR equipment

What does a DVR do for you?

With a DVR you can capture and record digital TV programs onto a hard drive that's inside the unit. You can typically record up to about 40 hours of video onto the internal hard drive.

A DVR makes it possible to record a live transmission while you are watching a recording and if you have a DVR with two digital tuners then you can watch one channel while you are recording another or record 2 programs from different channels while watching a recording made earlier.

Your DVR will also pause live TV if you want it to and restart it later. It turns live transmissions into recordings on the fly.

Personal Video Recorder or PVR explained?

A PVR or Personal Video Recorder is a DVR with some advanced features. For instance with a PVR you might find that it can learn what programs you watch and automatically record them for you if you forget to set the recorder. You can also use a PVR to create a recording playback list and have it record only the best programs and then watch them as if it were your own personal TV channel.

The use of HDTV (High Definition Television) is increasing in the United States, Australia, and Japan.

How is this different from a standard TV? The main differences between HDTV and the standard TV are higher picture resolution, multi-channel audio, and a wide screen 16:9 aspect ratio. This means sharper and clearer pictures along with accurate and detailed sound.

How do the various HDTV models differ?

Some models can deliver images that are up to six times sharper than what the standard televisions display. The images we see on a television are made up of horizontal lines. These lines are scanned continuously to form an image. The standard television typically has 480 lines. In comparison, HDTV can contain 1080 lines. Unlike standard TVs, HDTV does not scan one line at a time to make the image, but delivers the whole image at once. This results in much greater detail and more realistic colors.

Aspect ratio is another difference between standard TVs and HDTV. Current day TVs use an aspect ratio of 4:3, making them look almost square. This is rapidly being replaced by the HDTV aspect ratio of 16:9. The bigger aspect ratio results in a wider screen. Due to increasing popularity of home theater systems, HDTV uses the same aspect as the screen in a movie theater. A wide screen means that the TV does not have to cut off the sides when you are watching your DVDs.

Another movie theater influence in HDTV is that audio is now presented using the Dolby Digital Standard. Currently, surround sound involves tricks to simulate the origin of audio. With the Dolby Digital Standard, the audio experience is as thrilling as the video.

Do I need any additional 'stuff' with an HDTV?

A special receiver is needed to view programs in HD format. There are many choices available in the market today. The safest choice is to get a receiver that can accept HD format as well as standard format. This can become important because not all programs are currently available in HD. Simply connect the receiver into your HDTV and you are on. With the rise in the popularity of HDTV, the number of programs available has also been steadily increasing.

Another result of this widespread use is that the HDTV’s are quite inexpensive. Some networks have packages that include HDTV for as little as $50 a month. Since the trend has caught on and is making money, it is only natural that more and more options will soon be available to consumers. Within a year or so, HDTV could be available at the same cost as that of standard TV today.

A wise Muppet creature once astutely commented that it's not easy being green. Indeed, conserving energy, putting the environment first and working with "green" technology is not always the easiest course of action. However, there are many steps that individuals can take to help make the world a healthier and more sustainable place to live, from high-ranking politicians to local Internet consumers. Factory emissions and fuel economy standards are some of the biggest issues facing large companies. On a smaller scale, the individual consumer faces decisions on whether or not to buy green products (anything from recyclable grocery materials to artificial golf turf) and conserve natural resources.

In May 2008, a number of networks dedicated the month to awareness of energy conservation. Along with changing their websites and logos, their advertising efforts sported their intent as well.

Direct TV is promoted a green campaign on its website, highlighting four satellite specials that are dedicated to green living. One of the most exciting programming features was the Planet Green Network. This channel is produced by the same educated minds over at the Discovery Channel, and highlights eco-conscious programming detailing basic recycling practices to educational content on green production facilities. The network offered 250 hours of original programming that helped green supporters to stay firm in their resolve and help undecided viewers take action for the first time.

Forecast Earth is another feature devoted to green causes, produced by the Weather Channel on channel 362 and airing on Saturdays and Sundays. This informative series highlights climate, specifically the climate change crisis and how it is affecting different parts of human society. The show reviews the latest news and scientific developments along with expert commentary as to how these changes will affect earth in the near future. As the title suggest, this show is the "forecast" for tomorrow's earth.

Over on the HGTV the show "Hidden Potential: Looking for a Green House" first airing in May was a reality show focusing on creating an eco-friendly house. The show takes place in Portland and follows a young family who want to create an eco-friendly house with the help of a design expert. Using computer-generated graphics, the household begins the adventure of designing a new age house built in the best interest of Mother Earth. The show follows the "competition" of three different eco-friendly homes, each created with a different vision and strategy. Like any hit reality show, Hidden Potential includes entertaining interviews and well "crafted" suspense.

Then there was the special "Rock Solid: Eco Masons Dean and Derek Go Green" airing on the DIY Network, described as a softer and greener side of tumble stonemasonry, specifically, softscape and hardscape construction. The show offered many ideas in renovation ideas for home building and home improvement along with an in-depth review of various green products.

Last but not least, Direct TV does its own part to improve the environment. Like many eco-conscious companies, Direct TV is now offering the option of paperless billing, auto bill pay and email updates. This reduces the amount of unnecessary mail and thus unnecessary wood production. It's obvious that Direct TV satellite TV has plenty to say regarding earth's most important subject.

All home entertainment units have three major components that are essential to creating a functional home theater system. The main focus of any theater is the television or video display. Sound quality is essential. A complete sound system is key to providing the soul and voice of the theatre. A source player is the third element, providing the picture and sound. Cable or satellite TV is standard in most homes but DVD and other players are also added to expand the usefulness of a home theater. It is these three major pieces of electronic innovation that make watching a movie, playing the XBox or listening to a favorite CD enjoyable and worthwhile.

Visual Element

There are video display options available to a home depending on budget and preferences.

Rear Projection Television. Television technology has been based on the cathode ray tube (CRT) up until the 21st century. In a rear projection TV, there are three tubes, each representing one of the primary colors. This colors mix along with quality wiring and a good screen, provide a very high resolution picture. Manufacturers are starting to drop rear project televisions from their product lines however. Research your manufacturer's warranty before purchasing a rear projection television to make sure that customer service and repairs will be available down the line.

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Television. An LCD TV can be found as both a rear projection and as a flat screen. LCD rear projection TVs are much more compact than their CRT cousins and use less power. I have written about LCD televisions extensively in other articles so I will forego further explanation here.

Plasma Screen Televisions. In this technology, different gases are trapped between two panes of glass and an electronic signal can modify them to allow them to display a picture. These televisions are produced with a sleek thin design and can produce excellent resolution.

No matter which video display you are leaning toward, make sure to measure the area you want to put the TV so it fits when you bring it home. Also look into whether the screen is able to handle high definition (HD) television and DVDs.

Audio Elements

The sound system is going to make a huge difference in the enjoyment and functionality of your home theater. A good audio system includes the following elements:

Receiver. This component takes the audio signal, and often the video signal, and distributes it to the proper part of your system.

Amplifier. This component is what increases the signal strength before it is sent to the speakers. Often times, a purchased receiver will have an amplifier already built into it, making an additional piece of equipment unnecessary.

Surround Sound Speakers. Standard speaker sets of five are typical for most home theaters. There is a center channel, a right front, right rear, left front and left rear. These different speakers, when properly positioned, make the sound come from the appropriate direction.

Data / Signal Source

A basic DVD player is a standard signal source in most theater systems. The signal information sent from the player contains the video data as well as your 5.1 surround sound. Your cable box or digital satellite is also signal sources for a home theater. These sources can all be used in one system with the proper wiring and remote programming.

More and more people are making the switch from cable TV to satellite TV. When there are hundreds of channels to choose from, who can blame them? Satellite TV services offer one of the best means possible to take advantage of digital programming technology. That means you have access to high quality pictures and excellent sound. But with all these extras in terms of quality and service, what types of channels can you really expect from a satellite TV service? Here, we take a look at some of the goodies you can look forward to:

Arts and Entertainment

There are two types of programming you can expect from the arts and entertainment channels in satellite TV. These are the standard-definition and the high-definition. There are about 3 high-def channels in this programming, including HDNet, Mojo and Universal. For standard-def, you could expect around 30 channels, including BBC America, FX, Sci Fi, Classic Arts, Chiller, E!, SOAPNet and Style Network, among others.

Movies and Film

There are three packages offered in satellite TV - Basic, Premium and High-Def. The Basic package lets you access channels such as Turner Classic Movies, MGM HD, Sundance, Fox, Hallmark, American Movie Classics and Independent Film Channel, among others. Family and General Patronage

There are around 6 high quality satellite TV channels that you can access, depending on the plan you chose. These include ABC Family, the Hallmark Channel, AMG TV, ION Television, Guardian Television and America One.

For children and teen-oriented entertainment and learning and for fans of animation and Japanese anime, there are around 18 channels to choose from, including popular channels such as Nickelodeon, Nicktoons, Discovery Kids, Cartoon Network, Anime Network, Adult Swim and of course, the Disney Channel.

Learning and Education

Satellite TV providers have over 20 learning channels, including long-time favorites such as the National Geographic, Discovery, Discover Health, Science Channel, Smithsonian, Documentary and Animal Planet. High-def programming lets you access HD Theater from Discovery Communications.

News and Local TV

You can keep yourself updated with the latest events and newsmakers with satellite TV channels such as ABC, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. Business news comes courtesy of CNBC, Bloomberg and Fox Business. Network feeds are categorized as either East Coast or West Coast. For local news TV, there are around 28 channels to choose from.
